The End Of Marketing Overwhelm Part 1: How To Organize Your Efforts As A Hairstylist

I want you to stop everything and just answer this question:

"Marketing my business as a hairstylist is....."

When you read that sentence some word popped into your head, I just know it.  Some of you answered with words like "fun, exciting or interesting" which is awesome!  Most of you probably thought of words or phrases like "hard, overwhelming, confusing, too much work".  Some of you may have even said "pointless".

The truth is that marketing your business as a hairstylist can be all of those things.  There are times in your career where it will feel fun and there will be times where it is frustrating and feels pointless too.  This is all very normal so please know that you aren't alone here.

There is a fairly standard marketing package that most hairstylists have which includes business cards, some form of social media accounts, likely a website and some kind of review site like Yelp too.  That stylist likely hands out cards when he or she can, asks for referrals, posts to social media using great hashtags and works to build reviews and then says "hey, why aren't I getting more new clients or making more money"?

When we aren't getting the return that we had hoped with the standard package I described, some of us become discouraged and give up and hope to just start "building more organically", which is essentially impossible.  Those who are committed in the industry stumble upon somebody like me who gives you all of these great ideas to build clientele and your marketing efforts start to look like this:

Trust me, I get it and I will absolutely take blame where blame is due on this one.  For a couple of years now I've been sharing business building advice with hairstylists who have been able to double and triple their monthly income (awesome!).  The outcome of learning all of these marketing techniques has been great, but I kept seeing this pain point come up for stylists over and over and over.  A couple times a week I'd wake up to this email that had been sent to me around 2am that said something along the lines of:

"Britt, I am feeling overwhelmed.  I'm trying to put all of this into place and I have half finished marketing projects everywhere.  I need you to help me get organized here".  

I imagined a heart broken hairstylist writing me these tear soaked emails and then it hit me....I have never shared the most important piece of the marketing puzzle.  

I created Thrivers Society which will show you all of the techniques you'll need to build clientele and increase your income, but you all need the organizational system to put it into place.  If you ever logged into that online class room and felt completely overwhelmed seeing all of those social media mastery and business building classes staring back at you, it's okay.   If you aren't in Thrivers Society and are still feeling the overwhelm, that is okay too. 

Most businesses have entire teams of professionals with marketing degrees working full time to promote their business.  Heck, there are jobs where people just manage a single Instagram account, 40 hours a week, 365 days per year and make great money doing it.  We don't have any of that and I'm here to tell you we don't need it.  You can successfully market yourself and grow your business as a hairstylist in as little as 3 hours per week, you just need to know where to spend your time and efforts and I can teach you that piece.

There is a little secret strategy that successful marketers in all industries use to produce massive amounts of traffic to their businesses.  It has nothing to do with time, money, tools or specific marketing strategies at all.  It is a process that walks a new prospective customer through an emotional experience with you before they even step foot through your doors.  Over the next 3 weeks, I will be walking you through that process step-by-step so that we can end your feelings of overwhelm and start producing results in your business.

If you're at the place in your business where you need more clients to fill up your schedule, I'll show you a system for that.  If you are at the place in your business where you have plenty of clients but you want to make more money so you can work less, I'll show you a system for that.  If you're at the place in your business where you're happy with the pace your business is growing but you just don't want to have to put in so much time to market, I'll show you a system for that.

When you finally know the system that you need to get the results you want, you'll be able to finally pick and choose the marketing techniques that will produce the biggest results for you in your business right now and all the rest can be comfortably left on the back-burner.

Your homework this week is to take a piece of paper and fold it in half.  On the left side make a list of all of the things you are currently doing to market yourself.  On the right side write down what you wish your marketing plan looked like, meaning where you'd like all of your clients to be discovering you and ending up in your chair.

A few weeks ago I shared with you the statistic that all hairstylists lose about 10% of their clientele each year as clients move, decide to try a new stylist or want to see somebody at a different price point.  Marketing isn't optional for any stylist at any place in their career because of this 10% annual loss, so whether you are working through your first year in the industry or just celebrated your 20th anniversary as a hairstylist, we have no choice but to market your business.  What we do have a choice about is what those marketing efforts look like and I want yours to be as effortless as possible.
